Although our dentist states that using toothpaste is not necessary for healthy teeth (she says you can just use water, a toothbrush, and floss), you can call it tradition, habit, or a plain old creature comfort that draws us to reach and squeeze the tube. Though I have ventured into some very interesting herbal and/or essential oil based adult concoctions for myself, I tend to be much more selective when dealing with the kiddos.
I came across a product which I think is great, and the kids don’t seem to mind. The product states it is suitable for 3 months and up and is fluoride free. It also boasts the benefits of xylitol.
Usually, the earlier you start gum/tooth care with an infant, the better. There are special toothbrushes made for the wee little ones, and even non-traditionally shaped gum brushes that help the very young get used to various textures and simulations in their mouth. (An early start may help prevent Occupational Therapy (OT) later on for the extremely sensitive- and I have birthed a few of those. Plus your dentist will thank you).
There are original flavor and a few fruit flavors to choose from.
I have found this product many times in stores we frequent for my infants/toddlers. This company offers additional products for older children and adults as well. The link to the online store is below.
Ingredients include: purified water, xylitol, calcium clycerophosphate, cellulose gum, grapefruit seed extract
